In 2004, the Rationalist Society of Australia and Rationalist Association of Australia ventured into the artistic arena by co-sponsoring a play. The committee felt that the play, If I Should Die Before I Wake by Rebecca Lister, deserved support because it dealt with important social and ethical issues, including care of those with disabilities and voluntary euthanasia.
The play explores the dilemma an ageing and ill mother faces in both caring for and letting go of her grownup disabled child and, at the same time, dealing with her own impending death. The play is an excellent piece of quality entertainment that has the potential to impact in a unique and profound way upon community perceptions of illness, ageing, the value of an individual life and the experience of disability for individuals and their families. The characters are faced with life and death issues, issues of mortality and forgiveness, which affect all of us.
The play was held at Chapel off Chapel in Prahran and was staged by Shy Tiger Productions, which was formed by actor/producer Margot Knight to present strong plays that raise community awareness through theatre and promote public discussion and debate on important issues. The Rationalist Society of Australia is proud to have been associated with Shy Tiger in this endeavour.
